ABOUT Doré Ripley

Doré Ripley was born in Mill Valley, California and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area.  She is a graduate of California State University in Hayward where she also earned a Master's Degree in English literature.  She is currently a lecturer at California State University, East Bay.

Even as a child, Doré was attracted to historical fiction and books with titles like Unsolved Mysteries of the Past and Historical Whodunits, so when she ran across the true life mystery surrounding the origins of Shakespeare's celebrated Globe theater it seemed a natural fit for a novel.  It also seemed a way to explore how a woman could work within the masculine society that produced Shakespeare.

After leaving the corporate world, Doré began a "career" as a returning student and started dabbling in the academic genre-a genre filled with nominalizations and long sentences requiring frequent dips into the Oxford English dictionary.  Doré writes everyday, but now the emphasis is historical fiction.

So what does college offer a returning student?  What Doré really wanted from graduate school was something her parents couldn't, or wouldn't, give her—a reading list.  A reading list that led to this old white guy named William Shakespeare.  As a lecturer, Doré teaches critical reading and writing to freshmen college students in a variety of clusters and from a wide-range of cultural backgounds.  If you're interested in some different reading lists, including one on Shakespeare and his times, visit Doré's MySpace page at www.myspace.com/read_think_write.

Doré enjoys writing, riding, and travel, and currently lives in Clayton, California, with her husband, Geoffrey, their three horses, two dogs, and five spoiled rotten cats.
